Following is the third and final installment of Tim Watts’ story of the 2007 SPANK Rally held in San Diego, California. Part 3 – The Accidental Saddle Sore …I was pretty sure there was a Starbuck’s across the street from Shell station at the base of this big hill… Not only was there a Starbuck’s at the bottom of the hill but a Quizno’s right next door. I suddenly realized that I hadn’t had any real food all day. So, I strolled in and ordered my usual – small Mesquite Chicken and Bacon, easy on the Ranch – and headed over to ‘Buck’s to get an iced tea, plug in and see if I could do a better job of planning Leg 2 than I did Leg 1.

Following is part 2 of Tim Watts’ story of the 2007 SPANK Rally held in San Diego, California. Part 2 – The First Leg My cell phone alarm, which I set as a back-up, went off just before my wake-up call did Friday morning. It was 4:30 AM and I’d been awake for about fifteen minutes. Before long I was dressed, suited up and trying to get my Rally drawers on over my First Gear HT over pants. There’s no graceful way to do this and I was envisioning attempting this on the side of the road later in the day. Hmm…probably not the most difficult thing I’d do in the next 30 hours.

Washington 120 winner Tim Watts participated in the 2007 SPANK Rally held in San Diego, California. Tim shares his SPANK story over the next few weeks. Part 1 – Pre-Rally The story of my first Rally actually starts several days prior. My buddy Mark and I had hatched a plan where he would ride my ST1300 from the Seattle area down to a relative’s house in Mission Viejo, CA before the Rally and I’d ride it home afterwards. Our reasoning was that he would get a nice ride down through the desert areas of California and Nevada, I’d get my bike delivered to Southern California and we’d both save a day or two of precious vacation time that would’ve otherwise been spent droning along I-5. Mark keeps my old Nighthawk 750 in Mission Viejo so he can fly down on weekends during our rainy season, (he works a 4/10 schedule with Fridays off and his wife works for Alaska Airlines so he flies for free – jerk!), and enjoy the great roads and weather. I purchased one-way airfare to Santa Ana, flew down on the Wednesday before the Rally started and we spent the night at Mark’s relative’s place.
