Helmet Woes

By John Davis • Apr 24th, 2007 • Category: Rants and Raves

I was browsing the ‘net Saturday looking for a new helmet for my son. I ventured to the Fulmer helmet site as I have been pretty happy with my Modus AF-M. Right there on the home page is a graphic advising owners of AF-M helmets to read an important PDF. Uh-oh.

Seems my helmet has been recalled. Along with all other Modus AF-M’s in XL, XXL, and XXXL manufactured between November 2001 and April 2006. (Mine is a XXL manufactured in September 2003.) Four and half years worth of helmets. Ouch.

I called Fulmer yesterday to get the details. The deal is, send the helmet back and Fulmer will exchange it for a new helmet of the same size and model. Big picture it’s not a bad deal. My helmet is nearly 3 years old and I was thinking of replacing it this year anyway. So I get a new helmet at no cost. The downside is that I don’t have a back-up helmet and I am the only one who has such a large noggin so I am disinclined to buy something.

The man from Brown picked up my helmet this evening. It has to go to Mississippi and Fulmer won’t ship the replacement until they receive the old one. I expect I am helmetless for at least 10 business days. And the weather is supposed to improve later this week. Isn’t that always the way?

  1. [...] Perhaps it’s a good thing that I am helmet-less. The incredible weather we had over the weekend would have just found me dodging my household chores yet again to get out and ride. It was a perfect weekend to get out and collect some points in the Washington 120 or scoot over to Winthrop for lunch. Instead I spent the weekend working on the long-delayed replacement of my family room flooring. Meh. [...]

  2. I’m in the same boat. BUMMER
